At JE’s 2009 Senior Athletic Banquet, Matt Oney was inducted into JE’s Hall of Fame. Matt graduated from Jordan-Elbridge in 1985. During high school, he participated in football, wrestling and lacrosse. Matt was unable to attend the ceremony and had two-time NCAA Champion and 1980 Olympian Gene Mills accept award on his behalf -- along with his mother, Beth Oney. Matt sent a video of his acceptance speech for the audience to watch.
During Matt’s High School wrestling career, he was the 1984 OHSL Champion, Section III Class C Champion and participated in the 1984 Empire State games. As captain of JE’s 1984 football team, he earned All-League honorable mention. During lacrosse, he earned all-league honorable mention in 1984 and 1st team in 1985. He was awarded JE’s Male Athlete-of-the-Year and the Babe Ruth Award in 1985.
During his college wrestling career, he earned varsity letters in 1986, 88, 89, 90 and was Captain in 1990. He was a two-time NECCWA All-New England (3rd place 1988, 90), and two-time NCAA Division III Scholar All-American (1988, 90).
Matt currently lives in Honolulu, Hawaii, with his older brother Steve and father Carl. He teaches high school math and coaches both boys and girls wrestling at Punahou School. Oney’s boys wrestling team just won their 3rd straight state championship and his girls team just won their first state championship.
He will be an apprentice member of the USA Wrestling FILA Junior World Team Coaching staff in the summer of 2009 at the FILA Junior World Championships in Turkey.
