Each year, the Talented and Gifted Advisory Committee publishes the Three Lakes Sampler. This publication spotlights the emerging talents of students in our district as well as the other districts in the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES. Providing our students with the opportunity to have written and art work published is a powerful motivational tool for classroom teachers. I am most pleased to provide each of you with a copy of this year’s Three Lakes Sampler. The support of many teachers made the inclusion of our students’ work possible. High School MasterMinds Win 2010 Syracuse League Overall Title The veteran JE MasterMinds team had been there before—winning the Western Syracuse League title has been a tradition for the past three seasons. The last two, however, ended with heartbreaking second-place finishes to the likes of Christian Brothers Academy and perennial powerhouse of trivia Fayetteville-Manlius. This season was going to be different. The three-year stars Mitch Muehlberger, Kyle Alpha, Rachel Hare (1st team All-League), Dylan Kirk, and Mike Marrero were Seniors and could not let it be a three-peat of runner-ups. Western League MVP Junior Josh Alley knew that this was the Eagles best chance as well. Finishing the regular season at 11-1 had earned JE the bye in the double elimination Syracuse Section Tournament held at Onondaga Community College. The Eagles first opponent would be Manlius-Pebble Hill who had the MVP of the Eastern division on their squad in a battle of MVP's. The Eagles jumped out to a solid halftime lead and never looked back defeating MPH 225-150. The next match would be against Fayetteville-Manlius, the returning champion and state qualifier from 2009. F-M shocked Eastern League Champ CBA. The Eagles proved that 2010 was a different year and beat F-M 235-100. That win not only placed JE into the Championship, but guaranteed that they would need to be beaten twice to be denied the much coveted Syracuse Sectional Championship to represent the Region at the States in June. F-M again upset CBA and set up the championship against JE. In a tightly-contested battle, the Eagles held onto a 160-130 win and swept through the playoffs for the 2010 Championship title. The team dazzled the crowd throughout the tournament answering difficult questions on subjects in all areas. The team was coached by Jason Kufs, High School Social Studies teacher.

ECHOES is a program developed by the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse to involve and encourage middle school students in the creative writing process. The year-long project resulted in a performance consisting entirely of material written or suggested by middle school students from across New York State. These writing pieces often reflect the students’ unique thoughts, feelings and ideas. ECHOES combines the limitless imagination of middle school students with the theatrical craftsmanship of professional artists. Using characters and action envisioned by student authors, Merry-Go-Round Playhouse adds costumes, sets, props, music and sound effects to bring the student work to life.
At the recent JE Middle School performance, the acting troupe recognized 6th grade students Jordan Ostrander, Mike Auer, Tyler Scott and 8th grade student Tonya Carpenter with Honorable Mention certificates. Seventh grade student Taylor Solomon and 8th grade student Alexandria Schmiegel were both presented with Excellence in Writing Plaques. The group was also pleased to announce that four JE Middle School student writing pieces were featured and performed in the traveling show. 6th grade students Emily Drake and Emily Kuehnle wrote a song titled The Pieces. 6th grade students Abigail Gugel and Abigail Shafer wrote a commercial called The Folder Toaster.
